Abstract

1,196,785. Lasers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 18 Nov., 1968 [22 Nov., 1967], No. 53031/67. Heading H1C. A gaseous active medium is contained in the annular space between two concentric silica tubes 1, 2, and r.f. pumping energy is applied by a plurality of spaced tubular copper electrodes 11, 12 located both within the inner tube 2 and externally of the outer tube 1. The outer electrodes 12 are positioned so as to overlap the spaces between the inner electrodes 11. The ends of the tubes are sealed by mirrors 3, 4 and the inner tube 2 is held centrally by vacuum seals 7, 8. Both tubes are liquid cooled the inner through a tube 9 passing through a hole in mirror 3 and the outer by a jacket 10. It is stated that, compared with a simple tubular structure, the concentric arrangement of tubes 1, 2 enables a greater volume of gas to be contained in the discharge space without increasing the ratio of discharge space wall area to volume of enclosed gas. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,152,706.
