Abstract
1,266,009. Floating barriers. JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP. 5 Aug., 1969 [15 Aug., 1968], No. 39048/69. Heading E1H. A boom for controlling oil floating on water comprises substantially-rigid sheets f, g made of natural rubber, or a synthetic elastomer, reinforced with a fibrous substance, strips e of a closed-cell foamed material being provided to effect floatation of the sheets in a vertical position with about one third of the sheet g above the surface. The sheets are secured to each other by an adhesive and optionally rivets, the strips e and outer strips d of material similar to the sheets being secured in a like manner. Rings (j), Fig. 1 (not shown), at the bottom of the sheets facilitate anchoring. A rubber sheet a fixed by rivets b can be clamped, as shown, to a similar sheet at the end of an adjacent boom. The strips e are either oil resistant per se or protected by an oil resistant fabric or coating. The sheets f, g may be replaced by a single relativelythick sheet.
