Abstract

1,265,962. Honeycomb-cored shell-like structures. ROLLS-ROYCE (COMPOSITE MATERIALS) Ltd. 26 Feb., 1969 [27 Feb., 1968; 22 Oct., 1968], Nos. 9428/68 and 50149/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B3 and E1] A rigid unit of fibre-reinforced plastics material or carbon fibre reinforced metal which can be assembled with and bonded to similar units between two skins, e.g. of fibre-reinforced plastics material or metal, to form a honeycombcored shell-like structure comprises two walls which in the assembled structure extend between the skins, the walls as viewed perpendicularly to the skins, intersecting to define a cruciform shape, two of the four wall edges which in the assembled structure extend from one skin to the other, each being bifurcated to present a pair of inwardly facing surfaces which can receive between them the plain wall edges of adjacent similar units. In Fig. 1 the unit comprises a square base 10 and two main walls having portions 12, 14, 16 and 18 which together form a cruciform shaped construction, the plain outer edges 22 and 24 of walls 14 and 16 extending outwards beyond the edges 26 and 28 of base 10, and the wall edges of walls 12 and 18 being bifurcated to present pairs of parallel webs 27, 29 and 31, 33 defining between them grooves 34 and 36 which in the assembled structure receive skin wall edges 22 and 24 of adjacent identical units. Lid 38 of the same size and shape as base 10 is provided with four pairs of flanges 40 to 46 which co-operate with the upper ends of walls 12 to 18. Slots 47 make it possible to assemble adjacent units which have their lids 38 when it is necessary to assemble them by a vertical sliding action. Instead of having an integral base and a fitted lid the unit may have two integral bases or two fitted lids at its opposite ends. Alternatively one or both of the upper and lower ends of the walls may have flanges. The walls of the unit may be corrugated. Three or more adjacent and bonded units can tilt relatively to one another and conform without internal stresses to a skin surface which is curved in two planes.
