Abstract

1,265,782. Composite material. GLASURIT-WERKE M. WINKELMANN A.G. 16 Jan., 1970 [16 Jan., 1969], No. 2272/70. Heading B2E. A composite material comprises a layer of wood e.g. chipboard or hardboard bonded by means of a pigmented intermediate layer to a transparent polymerised synthetic resin produced by copolymerising an unsaturated polyester with a copolymerisable monomer the copolymerisation being effected in situ by ultra-violet radiation. The composites may be made by coating the wood with the pigmented material and then either before or after said coating has hardened, applying a solution of an unsaturated polyester dissolved in a copolymerisable monomer, preferably in amounts of 30-200 g/m<SP>2</SP>, and then hardening the resin by irradiating with U.V. light, e.g. of wavelength 3500-3800Š for 15-45 secs. The pigment is preferably white but other colours may also be used. The exposed surface of the resin layer may be painted. The composite may be a board and used in the construction of furniture.
