An electrically heated thermal storage heater comprises a core 7 of material which passes from solid to liquid phase on heating, the core being accommodated in a container having an upper expansion space 6 and being heated either by elements 10 mounted in protecting tubes embedded in the material as shown or by tubular elements mounted between adjacent containers. The heating elements extend over the full depth of the core.
