Abstract

1,265,264. Glow discharge lamps. V. A. GRUZDEV, B. V. SKVORTSOV, N. V. PROKOPENKO and E. A. NEDZVETSKY. 10 Feb., 1970, No. 6201/70. Heading H1D. An electrodeless lamp comprises a transparent gas filled envelope 1 containing a starting inductor 5 in the form of a solenoid with turns of decreasing diameter totally enclosed in a like coiled transparent tube whose inner surface is light reflecting. A quartz envelope filled with xenon at a pressure of 250-300 mm. Hg contains a quartz tube 3 coated on the inside with a silver layer 5 forming the inductor and light reflector. The tube is wound into a cupshaped helix the ends of which pass through the envelope via pipe unions 2 connected to an R.F. oscillator and a cooling system for passing water through the tube. The lamp emits light directionally and is used in sunlamps, spectroscopy and tests for colour fastness. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,202,848.
