Abstract

1,265,235. Pyridine. RUTGERSWERKE A.G. 15 April, 1970 [24 June, 1969], No. 17992/70. Heading C2C. Pyridine is produced by the reaction of a straight-chain aldehyde containing 4 carbon atoms, formaldehyde and/or methanol and ammonia in the presence of a dehydration/ dehydrogenation catalyst at a temperature of from 300‹ to 600‹ C. and of an aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon containing 6-9 carbon atoms. The preferred catalysts are those consisting of silicic acid and alumina. The preferred C 4 aldehyde is crotononaldehyde and the preferred hydrocarbon is benzene. A small amount of picoline may also be formed.
