MOROZOVA. 27 Oct., 1969, No. 52410/ 69. Heading B1X. A gas chromatograph comprises three enriching columns 1, 2, 3, and an analytical column 26. With valves in the positions shown, line 8 is connected to the test gas source and line 7 to vacuum, while carrier gas fed by line 28 to flow regulator 23 passes by line 25 through the reference cell of thermal conductivity detector 24, and also by line 20, through metering device 15 and line 20 to analytical column 26 and thence through the measuring side of detector 24. Once columns 1, 2, 3 have reached a pressure of only 3mm. Hg, device 15 is adjusted to isolate the vacuum in columns 1, 2, 3 and valves 4, 5 are adjusted to disconnect lines 12, 13 and lines 9, 10 respectively. Valve 6 is then switched to allow test gas in line 8 to pass at atmospheric pressure into column 1; when atmospheric pressure is reached in column 1, line 8 is shut off, valve 4 switched to connect lines 9, 10 and then valve 5 switched to connect lines 12, 13, so that separated fractions pass in turn along line 14 to line 16 in metering device 15. When this happens device 15 is switched to place line 16 in series between lines 19 and 20 so that the trapped fraction in line 16 is carried by carrier gas to and through analytical column 26. Helium, neon and hydrogen in air, hydrogen in argon and hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen in ethylene may be determined in this manner. Means are provided in valve 5 for an auxiliary gas comprising the test gas without the fraction being measured to be supplied to the system through line 11.
