Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A press for pressing textile articles comprises a first pressing member with a first pressing face facing a second pressing face of a second pressing member, the pressing members being capable of relative movement towards one another to press textile articles located between the first and second pressing faces, means for heating articles so located, a sheet of heat-resistant rubber material being mounted on the first pressing face with a first surface of the sheet adjacent to the face but spaced therefrom by a plurality of projections provided at the first surface of the sheet, the sheet having a plurality of open-ended passages extending through the thickness thereof and being provided with temperature sensitive means included in an electrical control circuit arranged to halt the application of pressing pressure to the textile articles when the temperature sensitive means reach a predetermined temperature resultant from the application of heat to the articles. In an embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the press comprises a heated buck 18 forming the second pressing member, a stationary plate 26 to which is secured an inflatable bag forming the first pressing member 32, movement of said first pressing member relative to said second pressing member being effected by inflating the bag by the introduction of a gas under pressure into the space between the plate 26 and the first pressing member 32, a flexible sheet 46 of rubber material having a plurality of open passages 54, one of which contains a thermocouple 70 connected to a temperature control unit, being secured to the member 32 by projections 52, the articles to be pressed being fed into the press by conveyer band 6. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8, a pivoted head having a first pressing face 24, movable relative to heated buck 202 has a sheet similar to that described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 secured to the pressing face 204. The press may be used to bond textile sheets with a thermoplastic resin or to effect permanent pressing of a textile article by means of a thermoplastic resin applied to the article.
