Abstract

1,264,961. Air cushion vehicle. HOVERMARINE Ltd. 16 June, 1969 [14 June, 1968], No. 28407/68. Heading B7K. A gas cushion vehicle of the rigid side wall kind is provided with means to vary the crosssectional area of the side walls to prevent pitching and rolling of the vehicle. A bottom edge portion 6, Fig. 2, is pivotally mounted at its centre to rotate about a hinge pin 27 in a longitudinally extending hollow 25 and has concertina-like seals 26, extending between the portions 6 and the side walls. Any pitching of the vehicle is sensed by an accelerometer or a gyroscope (31, Fig. 1, not shown), which then operates hydraulic jack 28 via hydraulic signal lines 30 and causes the portion 6 to rotate from a position flush with the bottom of the side wall to a position shown in Fig. 2, thus producing a moment opposing the pitch change. A similar system, Fig. 3, is used to control any rolling of the craft.
