Abstract

1,264,648. Caustic soda. PPG INDUSTRIES Inc. 4 Sept., 1969 [5 Sept., 1968], No. 43754/69. Heading C1A. Caustic soda prills are produced in a process comprising forming droplets of molten NaOH, contacting these droplets with a substantially inert gaseous coolant containing water vapour, and controllably cooling the NaOH to a temperature below 260‹ C. but not below 122‹ C. The process may be effected in a prilling tower, after which the prills may be removed by cooling to 60‹ C. or lower in a substantially anhydrous atmosphere. Gaseous coolants may be argon, nitrogen, helium, or atmospheric air which optionally contains water vapour and/or a minor amount of CO 2 . The product typically has a bulk density of 65-85 lbs./cu. ft. and comprises prills with a diameter of 0À5-3 mm. which contain up to 1% by wt. Na 2 CO 3 and up to 2% by wt. H 2 O.
