Abstract

1,264,626. Slave cylinders; adjusting internal acting brake shoes. GIRLING Ltd. 20 Jan., 1970 [20 Jan., 1969], No. 3223/69. Headings F2E and F2F. A dual slave cylinder for applying brake shoes (not shown) comprises a cylinder body 10 housing a pair of opposed actuating pistons 13, 14 at opposite ends of the cylinder, a pair of intermediate floating pistons 18, 19 which in co-operation with pistons 13, 14 divide the cylinder into two working chambers 26, 27 and resilient means acting between the intermediate pistons 18, 19 and tending to urge them apart. As shown in Fig. 1, the resilient means is in the form of a Belleville washer 24 and the intermediate pistons 18, 19 have a spigot-socket connection 22, 23. Pressure inlets 11, 12 communicate with chambers 26, 27 and a space 28 between the pistons 18, 19 is communicated with atmosphere via a vent hole 29. As shown in Fig. 2, the resilient means comprises a coil compression spring 30, and the slave cylinder is constructed so that the position of the pistons are adjusted as wear compensating adjustment of the brake shoes takes place. In both embodiments the effective area over which the two intermediate pistons 18, 19 are exposed to atmospheric pressure is the full area of the cylinder and should one of the hydraulic systems fail the brakes are applied by pressure in the other system, the pistons 18, 19 moving as a unit.
