Abstract

1,264,307. Double glazing; double windows; hinges. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 May, 1969 [31 May, 1968; 12 Aug., 1968], Nos. 26322/68 and 38377/68. Headings E1J, E1R and E2F. [Also in Division C1] A glazed frame which may be used for the conversion of an existing single glazed frame to a double glazed frame or for the conversion of a single window to a double window, comprises an edge strip of stainless steel extruded aluminium or plastics having a base web 19 and extending up therefrom perpendicular flange 21, or two parallel flanges and a sheet of glazing material 17 bonded at least along the marginal portion to said web and flange or between the two parallel flanges or between the web and the outer surface of one of the parallel flanges. The panel 17 may be glass or transparent or translucent vinyl chloride polymer or polymethyl methacrylate. The synthetic plastics frame may be glass reinforced polyester resin, nylon, glass reinforced nylon, vinyl chloride polymer, a polyacetal or polymethyl methacrylate. The sheet is bonded to the strip by adhesive material comprising polyvinyl butyral, a polysulphide, a polyacetal or an epoxy resin and many specific examples are given, including cases of employing adhesion promoting agents. The frame 19, 21 is secured to the existing frame of a single glaze by nylon hinges 24, 25 which may be on each side and of the form shown in Fig. 4 so that on the appropriate sheet sides the pin 94 may be withdrawn from the hinge parts, to pivot about a side or free the frame 19, 21 completely from the single glaze frame. Alternatively hooks 28, 29 may be provided on certain sides. Fig. 3 shows the mounting for a double window. A seal strip 23, Fig. 1 or 81, Fig. 3 of foamed plastics, &c prevents the passage of air between the frame 21 and the existing window frame 10, 11 or 65, 66.
