1,264,127. Modifying polybutadienes. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 9 June, 1969 [10 June, 1968; 17 June, 1968], Nos. 27446/68 and 28663/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C5] Catalytic reactions between different defined olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon materials effected in a homogeneous liquid medium in the presence of a catalyst comprising (i) an organometallic compound of a Group IIa, IIb, IIIa or IIIb metal, (ii) a salt of Mo, W, Nb, Ta, Re, Ru, Os, Ir, Sn, La, Hf, Zr, Ti, Mn, Cr, Rh, or Pd, and optionally (iii) water, an alcohol, a polyalcohol, a mercaptan, a polymercaptan or a hydroperoxide, may include the following:- (a) increasing the M.W. of 1,4-polybutadiene by back-bone addition of cyclooctene; (b) increasing the M.W. of 1,2-polybutadiene by side-chain addition of cyclooctene; (c) decreasing the M.W. of 1,4-polybutadiene by reaction with 2-butene (which may lead to eventual complete breakdown-see Division C5); and (d) modifying the vinyl side-chains of 1,2- polybutadiene by reaction with 3-hexene, a C 4 side chain being produced.
