Abstract

1,264,084. Teaching and training. HONEYWELL G.m.b.H. 6 Oct., 1970 [14 Oct., 1969], No. 47407/70. Heading F3C. A weapons-training apparatus has a gun sight having controls capable of producing signals corresponding to the aim (i.e. direction and range) of the sight, a computer responsive to the aiming signals and to stored signals relating to at least ground co-ordinates and projectile type for calculating a simulated projectile trajectory, and display means arranged with the sight for superimposing a simulated projectile trajectory on an image that is viewed through the sight in use, the computer being coupled to the display means so as to determine, with corrections for projectile flight time, the trajectory that is displayed. In an embodiment a model is provided with movable targets Z and a sight is mounted in a fixed position, the movements of the sight being simulated by means of rotatable prisms 7, 8. When a gunner 1 looks through an eye-piece a particular section of the model is seen, this being an image 3 and by rotating the prisms 7, 8 by means of a double hand grip 5, the gunner can view any section of the model. A projectile trajectory 4 is superimposed on the image 3, this being produced by means of a computer and being displayed on the screen of a cathode-ray tube 11 in the form of a sequence of spots of light, the latter being reflected by a prism 12, is thus superimposed over the image 3. The trajectory display is produced in such a way that a shot can be fired at any point in an arbitrarily fired area. The firing result obtained corresponds with the actual circumstances of the aiming of the weapon, the type of projectile chosen and the conditions set by the model. Account can also be taken of interference factors selected by the instructor such as barrel wear, loading tolerance, barrel deflection, side wind and tilting. Additionally the brightness of the light trace may be controlled in line with actual conditions, the display can be made immobile, for example, at the point of target penetration, and the ellipse of the projectile scatter area can be inserted at any point in the trajectory display. Thus the gunner can take interference parameters into account when adjusting the sight and the instructor can set conditions and discuss effects with the gunner.
