Abstract

1,264,027. Polyacrylonitrile filaments. CELANESE CORP. 17 Dec., 1969, No. 61404/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions C1 and C3] Polyacrylonitrile fibres soluble in N,N- dimethylformamide and exhibiting no appreciable exothermic reaction when heated to 500‹ C. are prepared by spinning a solution in an organic solvent of a polymer consisting predominantly of recurring acrylonitrile units and 0À1 to 10% by weight of the polymer of a Lewis acid, as such or in the form of a complex with a nucleophilic reagent, said solution having been maintained at a temperature below 190‹ C. until cyclization of the polymer without substantial increase of the viscosity of the solution has been achieved. The fibres may be drawn over a heated shoe, or steam drawn, in a ratio of 3 :1 to 7 :1. Stabilized insoluble fibres may be prepared by heating the fibres in an oxygen containing atmosphere, e.g. at 200‹ to 400‹ C., and carbonized and graphitized products may be obtained by further heating in an inert atmosphere, e.g. at 900‹ to 3000‹ C. The acrylonitrile may be copolymerized with up to 15 weight per cent of styrene, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or vinyl pyridine. The solvent may be dimethyl formamide, dimethylacetamide or butyrolactone. The Lewis acid may be stannous chloride, stannic chloride, boron trifluoride, sulphurtrioxide, ferric chloride, titanium tetrachloride, aluminium chloride or indium chloride, or an ether, amide or t-amine complex thereof. In examples solutions of polyaorylonitrile in dimethylformamide are cyclized by heating at 140‹ C. in the presence of (I) stannic chloride/dimethylformamide complex, (II) stannous chloride and (III) borontrifluoride/dimethylformamide complex, wet spun into filaments, which are drawn over a hot shoe at 135‹ C. and stabilized by (IV) heating in air at 300‹ C. and graphitized by (V) heating in an inert atmosphere at 2900‹ C.
