Abstract

1,263,986. Electrophotographic element. RICOH K.K. 29 May, 1969 [7 June, 1968], No. 27268/69. Heading H1K. An electrophotographic element for offset printing comprises a support, an intermediate layer, a photoconductive layer and a conductive layer, the intermediate layer comprising a reaction product of a vinyl resin and an amino resin. The vinyl resin contains a 2-hydroxy ethyl, 3-hydroxypropyl or 5-hydroxypentyl group. The support is preferably paper which has been sized with polyvinyl alcohol or a cationic latex to render it conductive. The intermediate layer is applied as an alcoholic solution of copoly methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate and hydroxyethyl methacrylate together with a melamine resin to the sized support. The coated support is heated to 100-150‹ C. thereby crosslinking and hardening the resin mixture to give a water-proof layer. A layer of ZnO, acrylic and alkyd resins, cobalt and manganese naphthenates and a sensitizing dye are applied as a toluene solution. The intermediate layer may be applied as an aqueous solution. Other hydroxylcontaining vinyl polymers may be made by solution polymerization of a hydroxyl vinyl monomer and another vinyl monomer with or without an unsaturated carboxylic acid wherein the carboxylic acid groups have been neutralized with ammonia or an amine. Other amino resins are also specified. The paper support may also be sized with water-soluble cellulose or acrylic resin.
