Abstract

A method for the continuous incineration of domestic refuse or the like comprises the steps of reducing the refuse to a pulverulent condition, continuously introducing the material into one end of a combustion chamber, maintaining through flow of the particles of refuse through the combustion space by a forced flow of preheated air, causing or supporting combustion by one or more burners within the said chamber, and extracting part at least of the heat of the combustion products and using it to heat the injected air. As shown, the incinerator comprises a loading section A, a combustion chamber B, a heat exchanger C, fly-ash scrubber towers E and a chimney F. The pulverized material is fed by a conveyer 20 into the section A, passing therefrom to the chamber B under the action of a high-velocity nozzle injector 1 fed with heated air under pressure. The hearth 6 of the chamber B incorporates a number of high-pressure air nozzles 7, supplied along with the injector 1 via a compressor 16 and heat exchanger C, which nozzles maintain the pulverized refuse in suspension adjacent burners 8 and direct the incombustible residue across the hearth and around baffle wall 10, the heavy particles falling into water sump 11. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the combustion chamber is vertical, the refuse being fed in at the top.
