Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A safety glass comprises two layers of glass between which are interposed a layer of a polyurethane elastomer prepared by simultaneous reaction of (I) polytetramethylene ether glycol of number average M.W. 800-2000; (II) 1,4- butanediol and (III) 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate or mixtures thereof containing up to 35 mole per cent of 2,6-tolylene diisocyanate. From 2 to 3À5 moles of II are used per mole of I and substantially equivalent amounts of III are used to react with the active hydrogen atoms of I and II. The elastomer may be prepared by a prepolymer process providing that both I and II are simultaneously reacted with excess III to form the prepolymer which is subsequently reacted with the remaining polyol. In an example a film of elastomer 0À026 inch thick is inserted between two # inch sheets of plate glass and the assembly heated between blotter cushions in a steam heated press at 175‹ C., first at 35 p.s.i. for six minutes increasing to 2000 p.s.i. for four minutes, then cooling under pressure. The laminates were then heated for nine minutes at 135‹ C./225 p.s.i. in an oil autoclave.
