Abstract

When a decade counter 40 1 -40 p is to be read out, an input 46 steps ring counter 45 to enable gate 47 1 and resets bi-stable 50 so that fast clock, pulses 44 are applied to all decades 40 through gates 41 and to a single decade counter 53 which is preset to 9. When units decade reaches a count of 9, gate 47 1 sets bi-stable 50 to close gate 55, so that counter 53 which is counted down by the clock pulses, now holds the count originally registered in decade 40 1 . To read out the next decade 40 2 a further input 46 is applied to step ring counter 45 to enable gate 47 2 and decades 40 and 53 are respectively counted up and down from the count registered at the end of the preceding decade read-out, until decade 40 2 reaches 9. The process is repeated for the following decades 40. The output of counter 53 may be decoded and applied in parallel to the cathodes of indicator tubes 58 which are switched on in synchronism with the decade read-out by the outputs 46 of ring counter 45.
