Abstract
126,351. Creed, F. G. Jan. 2, 1917. Projectile fuses.-Relates to percussion fuses of the kind in which arming is effected on discharge by relative rotational movement of two main parts of the fuse, such movement being caused by inertia. According to the invention, the two main coacting parts are so arranged that one part retracts the other during the flight of the projectile and is then free to move forward on impact so as to effect ignition. In the construction shown, the inertia pellet e is normally held at safe by a nut d screwed on it. On discharge, the nut screws back along the pellet, which is caused to rotate with the fuse-body a by means of its flat end e<2>. When the nut d has moved to the rear, the pellet is free to advance on impact, a flash-hole g leading to a passage through the pellet being at the same time uncovered. The pitch of the screw-threads is such that the flash-hole is not uncovered until the projectile is clear of the gun. The percussion cap u is held in place in the fuse-body by a grub-screw v. The Provisional Specification shows a construction having certain modifications of details, such as the means for causing the inertia pellet to rotate with the fuse-body.
