Abstract

1,263,500. Lasers. HITACHI SEISAKUSHO K.K. 19 June, 1969 [21 June, 1968], No. 31169/69. Heading H1C. In a krypton laser pumped by an electric discharge within a capillary tube containing the active medium, termination of laser output by the pinch effect is prevented by operating the discharge under conditions of pressure and current which lie above the line plotted in the figure. A minimum current of 500 A/cm.<SP>2</SP> is required, and a magnetic field of 600-1200 gauss may be applied along the tube axis to enhance output. The use of such a magnetic field increases the slope of the plotted line, so that a higher gas pressure is required for stable operation at a given current. The maximum pressure used should be restricted to three times that given by the plotted line to avoid undue loss of output. Argon, neon and helium may be used with the krypton, the total pressure of the gases being that determined from the figure. Without the magnetic field, the initial pressure P (torr) is given by P # 1À2 x 10<SP>-3</SP>j, where j is the current density (amps/cm.<SP>2</SP>). With the field, P # 1À9 x 10<SP>-3</SP>j.
