A mattress support comprises a rectangular frame 1, resilient elements which may be wooden slats 2 or a wire netting attached to and extending across the frame 1, and two adjustably positionable, stiff bearer bars carried by the frame and adapted to support the resilient elements from below to vary the degree of resilience of the mattress support. In one embodiment, Fig.1 symmetrically disposed bearer bars 10 are provided at their ends with strips 11 slidably engaged in grooves (12) in the frame ends 13. The bars 10 are adjustably spread apart either manually or by a handle 20 driving spindles 18, 19 each having both left and right hand threads engaging nuts on the bars 10. In another embodiment, Fig.4, bearer bars 38 are selectively supported between spaced ledges 40 formed on the webs of an inverted-V section, plastics nails fitted over cross rails (36) of the frame 31. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8, the bearer bars 63 extend longitudinally of the frame and are pivotally mounted at their ends, as at 64, to the ends of the frame. Each bar 63 is movable between an operative position in which it rests on a stop 68 and its rounded upper end 65 bears on the underside of the slats 52 and a retracted position in which it rests on a further stop 71 and does not bear on the slats 52.
