Abstract

1,263,091. Easy-opening cans. CEBAL G.P. 20 Jan., 1969 [22 Jan., 1968], No. 3059/69. Heading B8D. A fully opening metal can end 4 comprises a removable panel 8 defined by a peripherallyextending continuous score line 7, and a pull tab 9 riveted at 28 to the panel and having a nose portion 26 for initiating rupture of the score line extending over and beyond the score line, said tab having a generally C-shaped cut 30, 31 defining a hinge line 33 between the nose portion and the rivet. On raising of the ring end 19 of the tab, the nose wipes along the end wall across the score line to indent the panel periphery at 35, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), and initiates rupture of the score line. The panel bends, on pulling of the tab, about an area 37 closer to the rivet thereby further retracting the nose as indicated at 40 inwards of the panel edge. The removable panel is provided with an inner shallower anti-fracture score line 46, a recess 41, and inwardly-formed arcuately-extending grooves 46, Fig. 3, the latter facilitating removal of the panel without lifting of the flange 44, strengthening of the cam end against flexing during cooking of the contents, and preventing dip-down of the end panel when finally removed. The tab has an apertured recess 13, communicating with a channel 17 extending towards the tab end and terminates in the rounded nose 26. TheC-shaped cut is formed in the base of the recess. The ring portion 19 of the tab and the outer side edges 24 are provided with rolled strengthening edges 21, 22, 25. Outwardly pressed louvres 18 are provided in the top wall of the tab and define edges 18a perpendicular to the tab plane of symmetry to facilitate correct location of the tab on the panel prior to riveting. The tab is of heavier gauge sheet metal than that of the can end. In a modification, Figs. 19 and 22, for smaller sized cans, the panel is provided with a pair of protuberances 53 which are adapted to co-operate with the intermediate one of three annular strengthening corrugations 55-57 in the base of a like can to facilitate sticking. The third point of support is provided by the nose end of the tab engaging the outermost of the base corrugations, which corrugations are progressively upwardly offset to accommodate the remaining portions of the pull tab.
