Abstract
1,263,062. Rolling; making finned tubes. L. G. HERBERT. 16 May, 1969 [22 May, 1968], No. 24350/68. Headings B3A and B3M. An apparatus for making a helically finned tube comprises a tube feed 10 which also rotates the tube, a hollow anvil roll 13, a pressure roll 18 which co-operates with the anvil roll to feed strip to the tube, and a forming roll 19 to helically groove the tube. The axis of the anvil roll 13 is inclined relative to that of the tube so that part of its internal surface acts as a back-up for the forming roll 19. The anvil roll is connected to a rotatably driven support 15. The roll 19 is driven preferably at a speed different from that of the tube, e.g. a surface speed difference of 65 ft./min. The strip is secured to the tube by a peening roll 20. The surfaces of the anvil roll 13 and the roll 18 which feed the strip may be roughened to roughen the strip and increase the heat-exchange properties of the fin. The surfaces may also co-operate to form slits in the strip which open as it is wound.
