The key 12 by which an excavator or mineral-cutting tooth 5 is secured on the nose 2 of a holder 1 is so recessed as to provide a locking shoulder 19 that will engage with an opposed locking shoulder on the holder to prevent, after the key has been axially inserted into the aligned passages 9, 10, 11 in the assembled tooth and holder past a pressure element 22 mounted in the holder to act transversely of the passage in the holder, withdrawal of the key unless the pressure element has been compressed by appropriate movement of the key transverse of the passages for the shoulder 19 to clear the locking shoulder of the holder. Preferably a shoulder 19 is provided at each end of the key and such a key has opposite the surface thereof on which the shoulders 19 are formed a recessed central surface 16 that is abutted by the pressure element and two inclined surfaces 13, 14 for facilitating entry of the key into the passages 9, 10, 11. Variously disposed recesses may be formed in the opposed surfaces of the tooth and holder to facilitate mounting of the tooth on the holder.
