In a communication system the transmitted carrier is frequency-switched in steps over time t such as in Fig. 2 providing a series of parallel lines B 1 , B 2 &c., on each of which a number of carrier frequencies lie in a manner peculiar to each receiver to provide address-coding. In order to synchronize the receiver to this switching; initially the receiver operates in a search mode scanning for example, the frequencies K1, K2, K3 along parallel lines B1, B2 &c. until coincidence is reachedalong line A and the search programme is terminated. The receiver then changes over to a frequencyswitching programme which is in accordance with and in synchronism with that of the transmitter.
