Abstract

Also in Division G4] In a normally-closed pneumatic relay a closure member 9a is biased by a spring 10a against a seat 11a to block communication between an inlet A and an outlet S. The latter normally communicates with an exhaust P via longitudinal grooves 16a in the stem 5a of the closure member. A piston 6a on the foot of stem 5a forms with the housing a control chamber connected to port B. A pressure signal at B causes the piston to move upwards to open communication between inlet A and outlet S and close communication between outlet S and exhaust P by closure 23a seating on seat 24a. The housing is formed in three parts 1a, 2a, 3a which are held together by a strap 28 in groove 27 and to ensure sealing between the ports, the latter are made of differing hardnesses and have edges 30. The relay may be modified to be normally-open by forming a passage (14) through seat 11a and blocking communication between the outlet and exhaust by a seal (18) placed between the seat and housing part 2a. In modifications of this relay spring 10a may be dispensed with or replaced by an apertured spring membrane (10) and piston 6a may be replaced by a membrane (19) acting on the foot of the valve stem. Instead of the closures being formed as shown by conical surfaces of different inclinations to prevent jamming the closures are formed by rubber seals and are arranged on the top and bottom surfaces of closure 9a. Alternatively the substituted spring membrane (10) may act as the upper closure. Alternative control ports B, C separated by a selector piston (21) may be provided to form an OR gate. In the presence of only one control signal an AND gate may be formed by combining the control and inlet signals. Memories can also be formed by combining relays.
