Abstract

1,261,227. Copy milling. H. J. BILLING, and G. G. HARRISON. 12 May, 1970 [14 May, 1969], No. 24474/69. Heading B3K. A machine for cutting a profile comprises a spindle 11 including means, such as a nut 3 and bushes, for securing a master profile 1 and workpiece 2 thereto, a quill 4 relative to which the spindle is rotatable, a follower roller 5 fast with the quill carrier 8 for engagement with the master profile and a cutter 6 for engagement with the workpieee, the quill and quill carrier being relatively movable and the distance between the axes of the roller 5 and cutter 6 being fixed. The quill 4 is slidable in the quill carrier 8 under the action of the roller 5 engaging the master profile 5. The distance between the axis of the roller and cutter can be adjusted by screw 9. In a modification (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), spindle 11 can be rotated by an electric motor (61) (Fig. 6, not shown), through reduction gearing (59) and a worm (28). An annular brake pad (57) is pressed adjustably against a top surface of the worm to prevent chatter. Also, the pressure with which the spindle and master profile are drawn towards the roller 5 can be adjusted by an adjustment nut (78) threaded on a piston-rod (70) of a piston-and-cylinder arrangement incorporating a spring (72) urging the quill 4 into the quill carrier 8. Further, a microswitch (30) normally closed, willbe opened if the roller 5 moves to the right due to its lack of engagement with the master profile, whereby the machine stops. In another modification (Fig. 7, not shown), a carrier 3 for a drum cam is provided, and the spindle is horizontally arranged in a carrier which is steadied by a steady bar.
