Abstract

1,261,192. Folding and bursting apparatus. FORMMASTER Ltd. 26 June, 1969 [28 March, 1968], No. 14910/68. Heading B8K. A web 10 which has been weakened along lines transverse to its longitudinal direction (e.g. by perforating) is zig-zag folded by periodically clamping the web on one side of a line of weakening with clamp members 18, 19, gripping the web on the other side of said line with gripping members 20, 21 and moving the gripping members towards the clamp members to buckle and crease the web. A guide member comprising a slotted plate 22 through which the web passes is moved alternately from side to side at each buckling operation to cause successive folds to assume opposite directions through meeting either guide face 23 or face 24. To burst the web, plate 22 is rendered inoperative and gripping members 20, 21 are arranged to move away from clamping members 18, 19. In a first alternative embodiment the web 10 is fed continuously by rollers 11 and 12, these rollers replacing the gripping members 20, 21 which are dispensed with. The guide member is then situated between clamp members 18, 19 and rollers 11, 12. In a second alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the gripping members 20, 21 take the form of a pair. of pivoted arms carrying pressure pads, one arm being situated on each side of the web and each being pivotable to cause the pressure pads to grip the web between them and move towards the clamp members.
