1,261,167. Purifying benzene. VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE A.G. 21 Aug., 1970 [22 Aug., 1969], No. 40410/70. Heading C5E. Benzene containing as impurities non-aromatic compounds selected from aliphatic, olefinic, cycloaliphatic and heterocyclic compounds is purified by (1) treatment with PCl 3 and an oxygen-containing gas in stoichiometrical excess so as to react with the impurities, forming phosphonic acid chlorides, (2) converting the reaction products into saponifiable or watersoluble products by adding water or an aqueous alkali, and (3) allowing the phases to settle and recovering the benzene phase. In step (1) an oxygen carrying catalyst may be present, e.g. V 2 O 5 .
