Abstract

1,261,028. Papermaking. RANSBURG ELECTRO-COATING CORP. 10 Dec., 1968 [12 Dec., 1967], No. 58593/68. Headings D2A and D2B. Paper and like materials, e.g. paperboard, are made by forming a water-wet web of fibrous cellulosic material, advancing the web through a zone in which dry particles of neutral or acid clay are electrostatically charged and attracted to and deposited on the web, and dewatering the web. The clay may be a dry air-floated clay, and is preferably supplied together with dry particles of binder and of titanium dioxide. When the binder is starch, it becomes gelatinized, at least in part, during the drying of the wet web. The applied material may be smoothed by passing the web, with the starch in the partially gelatinized condition, past a trailing blade. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,221,951.
