Abstract

1,219,802. Papermaking; electrostatic deposition. RANSBURG ELECTRO-COATING CORP. 5 Jan., 1968 [5 Jan., 1967], No. 889/68. Headings D1L, D2A and D2B. Fibrous cellulosic sheet material, e.g. paperboard or newsprint, as a wet web is sized by electrostatically charging atomized droplets of a slurry of ungelatinized granular starch, to deposit the particles on the wet web, dewatering and heating to assist gelatinization. The starch may be modified to reduce its gelatinization temperature, e.g. by surface hydroxyethylation. The liquid of the slurry is preferably water, but this may be replaced wholly or in part by glycols or polyglycols; glycerine and pentaerythritol can be added. The slurry may also contain surfactants, pigments, fillers, latices of styrene-butadiene copoloymers or emulsions of polyvinyl chloride. As shown, the slurry is circulated through conduits 22 to spray guns 23 above a web P of paper between the first and second wet presses of a paper machine. A valve in each spray gun is controlled through a control tube 24. The slurry is forced out of the guns by the pressure in the conduit, atomized and electrostatically charged by an electrode (33, Fig. 2 not shown). The web is effectively earthed and so the slurry is deposited at 25. Alternatively, it may be deposited on the wire side at 26, between the press and drier sections, between first and second drier sections or even before the couch, or both sides may be treated. The invention may also be used with cylinder or other machines. Very small amounts of starch can be applied uniformly by this technique.
