Abstract

1260974 Super-conductors KABEL-UND METALLWERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSH-UTTE AG 4 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 10395/70 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A conductor including a layer of a superconductor alloy or compound is produced by forming a strip of a constituent of the superconductor material into a tube round an elongate carrier having a surface layer of the lowest melting point component of the super-conductor material, welding together the edges of the tube, drawing the tube down on to the carrier, and heat-treating to form the super-conductor alloy or compound. As shown, a Nb strip 4 is bent round a wire 2 of Cu coated with Sn, the edges of the tube 5 are welded together by apparatus 6 in a protective atmosphere, the structure is pulled through a die 9 to draw the tube down on to the coated wire, and then passed through a furnace 10 to form a Nb 3 Sn interlayer. The wire 2 may be of Cu which is coated by passing it through a bath of molten tin before applying the Hb tube. The strip may be of Cu plated with Nb. The drawn structure may be wound into a coil before heating to react the constituents which may be achieved by means of a furnace or by passing an electric current through the wire.
