Abstract

1,260,517. Measuring displacement electrically; electric meters. ALLCO. Feb. 5, 1970, No. 5470/70. Headings G1N and G1Q. A differential transformer 1 Fig. 1 for measuring linear displacement comprises a rectangular core with an elongated primary winding 2 on one long side 1a and secondary windings 3, 4 on the shorter sides 1b 1c, whereby the position of a movable magnetic shunt 5 is indicated by the output signal from the two secondary windings connected in series opposition. The shunt 5 may be replaced by a short-circuited turn 6 Fig. 2 movable over coil 2, or over the other long side 1d, or over both. The device may be used to determine the angular position of the pointer 14 Fig. 8 of a galvanometer with no control spring, by comparing the voltage signal from the secondary windings 3, 4 with a voltage to be measured, only the difference being fed to the moving coil 10 of the galvanometer.
