Abstract

1,260,271. Electro-plating. BUCKBEEMEARS CO. Jan.6, 1970 [June 30, 1969], No.602/70. Heading C7B. Apparatus for controllably reducing the diameter of the apertures of a preformed mask, to allow the mask to be used as a pattern for laying a phosphorescent dot pattern for colour television tubes, comprises a cleaning station and a station for electrolytically depositing a layer of filler material such as zinc on the surface of the masks, together with transporting means between the stations and means at the second station for dislodging bubbles of gas from the mask and for removing evolved gases from the upper region of the plating tank. In the embodiment described the masks are mounted on a conveyer with provision for raising and lowering them from and into treatment tanks. The masks are passed successively through tanks in which they are cleaned by hot alkali, derusted by nitric acid, dipped in cyanide, dried, flask-plated with copper, plated with zinc, dried, cooled and inspected, with intervening spray rinsing tanks as necessary. In the zinc plating tank the masks are given a lateral to and fro movement to assist in dislodging gas bubbles, and are given a rotation through 180 degrees to ensure evenness of plating. In the plating tank shown in Fig.3 the masks move past a number of anode holders 42 each containing a set of zinc spheres 40. Shields 41 flare outwardly towards the masks to direct zinc ions in solution evenly over the faces of the masks. The anode holders are pivotally mounted to allow control over the evenness of plating. Plating solution enters through orifices 72, 73 and is withdrawn through orifices 70, 71 for filtering, control of temperature and pH, before being returned. The atmosphere over the solution is renewed by exhaust ducts 51, 52.
