Abstract

An article, e.g. a glass bottle, is coated by <PICT:0936147/III/1> <PICT:0936147/III/2> pre-heating it and immersing it in a bath of a liquid which sets or solidifies at a temperature higher than that of the bath, the temperature to which the article is pre-heated being such that on leaving the bath after a period of immersion sufficient to provide the desired thickness of coating, the article is still at a temperature higher than the setting temperature, and at least sufficient to cause the outer surface of the coating to set or solidify. The coated article may then be baked. The coating material may be a paste containing polyvinyl chloride and one or more plasticizers. The bath may be insulated from earth and charged to a high electrical potential to improve drainage of liquid as the article is withdrawn. In coating bottles, these may be given a small vertical reciprocatory motion at the end of the immersion stage, to build up a thicker coating around the mouth. As shown, bottles 1 are carried by intermittently-moved chain conveyers 4 through a pre-heating furnace 14, and are then dipped in the coating material by raising the tank 20, which is provided with a liquid feed and overflow device. By means of a cam system (not shown), the tank is given a small movement to the left before being raised, and acts through suitable connections to tilt the bottle as it enters the bath, and also given a small vertical reciprocatory movement towards the end of the dipping step. The tank 20 is insulated and electrically charged. After removal from the liquid, the coated bottles then pass through a baking oven 23 and are cooled by air supplied through nozzles 24. Work-holders. The bottles 1 are mounted on rods 2 to which L-shaped levers 8, 9 are pivoted at 7. The arms 8 are acted upon by a spring 5, and this urges apart the arms 9, which have bottle-engaging bosses 10. The bottles are released by members 12, carried by a beam 13, being lowered to bear against the arms 8.
