Abstract

1,259,912. A machine for forming and wrapping up individual articles. A. SERAGNOLI, E. SERAGNOLI, and M. T. CHIANTORE, [trading as G. D. S.A.S. DI ENZO SERAGNOLI E ARIOSTO SERAGNOL]. 15 Jan., 1970 [15 Jan., 1969], No. 1934/70. Heading B8C. A machine for forming and wrapping up individual articles, such as candies, comprises a channel 35 for feeding a continuous strip of article material past cutters 34, for separating individual articles, and into one radial section 32 of a four-section, intermittently rotatable, wheel 31 while it is stationary at a first article receiving station and which can be rotated to a second transfer station adjacent a transfer guide 83 which is defined by two parallel surfaces and has a transfer slot 84 for intermittently receiving successive lengths 85 of wrapping material. A pusher 88 for transferring the article, with the wrapper bent round it in U-shape along the guideway, moves the article into an aligned one of a series of pliers 19 on an intermittently rotatable wrapping-up wheel 19 while the latter is stationary at its first operating station. As the wrapping wheel 19 is indexed round to a second station adjacent a second guideway 117 it co-operates with a profile 115 which bends the wrapper into a prismatic tube and, while the wheel 19 is at an intermediate dwell position, the faces 85c of the wrapping are bent against the sides of the candy by a fork 114 which is oscillated into and out of position by a cam mechanism llla, Fig. 5. Plates 116 bend over end projections 85d, 85c. When the pliers 19 arrive at the second stop station the movable one 19b of a pair of pivoted jaws 19a, 19b is opened by cam mechanism 97, 99, and an extractor 119, operated by a rotatable disc 124 through a connecting link 121 and stem 120, Fig. 5, moves the articles through the parallel faces 117a, 117b of the second guideway 117 a slit 118 on the upper face 117b folding over one of the package tips 85g. The outer tip 85b is folded over by a plate 125a when the article is forwarded by a pusher 126, actuated by a rod 153, connected by a link 149 to a rotatable disc 148, Fig. 5, along a table 125 and on to a corresponding section 127 of an endless chain conveyer 128 one sprocket wheel 130 of which is driven through gearing 132-136, universal joints 139, 140 and a drive-shaft 137, Fig. 5. The conveyer 128 carries the article past a heated plate 154 which welds the upper wrapper portion and below a cooling sleeve 155. An electric motor 2 forms the primary drive, the intermittent rotary motion being imparted to the radial section wheel 31, the wrapping wheel 19, and a pair of feed rollers 44, 45 and disc 38 at the end of the channel 35 adjacent the cutters 34, by Geneva mechanisms incorporated in the corresponding gearing trains. The channel 35 includes two pairs of continuously rotatable feed rolls 40, 41 and corresponding upper discs 38, 39, and has a larger loop section 36 which acts as an equilizing chamber. The drive-shaft 23 for the gear train for the feed rollers 40, 41, 42, 43 and 44, 45 is connected to the main drive through a disconnectable clutch 63 so that a housing 65, for the whole of the feed mechanism, can be pivoted open about a vertical axis to provide access for cleaning, and maintenance, purposes &c.
