To prevent yarn 11 slipping off the edge of a rotatable package 10 during unwinding, it is guided by means of a pig tail 20 towards the centre of the package prior to its withdrawal at point P. The wishdrawal point P is preferably circumferentially spaced from the point G to which the yarn is guided, and the yarn may make more than one revolution of the package between the two points. In these subsequent revolutions, it may pass again through the pigtail 20, which is pivoted at 18 on an arm so that it may move towards the package axis as the package size decreases. The package is rotated by a driven roller 15.
