Abstract

1,259,458. Protective arrangements. BRITISH RADIO CORP. Ltd. 31 July, 1969 [31 July, 1968], No. 36593/68. Heading H2K. [Also in Divisions G2-G3] A D.C. to D.C. voltage regulator of the type comprising a chopper transistor Tr2 controlled by a driver transistor Tr1 through a transformer T1 to maintain a predetermined voltage between output terminals 12, 14 is provided with a current limiting circuit to switch the transistor Tr2 off permanently or intermittently when the current therethrough exceeds a predetermined value. Regulation is effected by variation of the mark-space ratio of control pulses applied to the base of the transistor Tr1, thus providing corresponding current impulses through the transistor Tr2. A measure of each such impulse is provided by a voltage impulse derived from a Circuit C1, R1, which impulse is compared with a reference voltage provided by adjustment of the wiper of a potentiometer R2. When, during a current impulse, a predetermined . current value is reached corresponding to a predetermined relationship between the impulse and reference voltages, a silicon controlled rectifier SCR1 is triggered to turn off the transistor Tr2. By providing a suitable impedance (e.g. a diode D2) in series with the rectifier SCR1, the regulator may be arranged to operate in a current-limiting. mode, e.g. current limitation occurs if necessary during each current impulse. Alternatively a diode D1 may be provided to maintain the rectifier SCR1 conducting and so provide a trip mode of regulator operation. The transistor Tr1 may be used to turn off Tr2 upon production of an overcurrent signal. The invention may be applied to control a shunt chopper transistor.
