1,259,093. Packaging; delivering sheet material; feeding webs. TEXALES (PLANT) Ltd. 23 Dec., 1968 [22 Sept., 1967], No. 43359/67. Headings B8C and B8R. Measured lengths of carpet or linoleum are cut from a supply roll 12 and are then rolled up for dispatch between driven rollers 40, 41, 42, 43 which are arranged to move apart to accommodate the roll of carpet and at a speed that governs its tightness. When it is complete, the roll is wrapped in a sheet of paper fed in laterally. Storage rolls from store 10 are controlled by flaps 13, 14 to pass in turn on to a belt 16 on rollers 15 arranged to unroll the carpet and feed it on to a conveyer 17. It is metered by photoelectric cells 21, which control axial and/or angular tracking of feed rollers 19 should the carpet not travel in a straight line, before passing to a feed table 20 and cutting table 22 where it is clamped at 23 and cut by a blade 24 when sufficient has passed on to a measuring platform 26 having a further photo-electric cell detector 29 which is preset to the required carpet length. At station 30, Fig. 2, which bridges the measuring platform, wrapping paper from roll 31a is fed on to a further measuring platform 34 to a further photo-electric detector 35 and adhesive is dispensed on to one edge of the paper. The paper is then cut at 37. The rolling station 39 comprises the roll-up rollers 40, 41, 42, 43 each including a series of friction axially spaced wheels (44, Fig. 3, not shown), those on rollers 40 and 42 having pointed teeth, those on roller 41 have flattened teeth, and those on roller 43 are smooth. A plurality of spring-guides 45 lie between rollers 40 and 41 in the gaps between the friction wheels 44 and are mounted between additional rollers 46, 47. The front edge 48 of these springs catches the leading edge of the carpet to turn it at 48 to initiate the rolling up, Fig. 5. The carpet is fed from conveyer 25, via conveyer 57 to the nip of the rollers 40-43. The upper rollers 40, 41 are vertically movable, their weight being counterbalanced by weights (58, Fig. 3, not shown) whose effectiveness is controlled by an actuator (62) and dash-pot (63), so as to accommodate the growing roll of carpet and to control its density. Meanwhile the springs 45 are raised clear of the carpet by rotation of a lifting roller 47 as the carriage 49 of the top rollers 40, 41 rises, Figs. 5 and 6. As the end of the carpet passes photo-electric cell 71, the paper wrapping starts to pass down inclined platform 38, so that it overlaps the carpet-end and finally wraps the roll of carpet. The rolled carpet is freed by raising the top rolls 40, 41 by means of the actuator (62). Exhausted supply rolls are rejected at chute 75.
