Abstract

An artificial leather in sheet or web form is manufactured from a soft polyurethane foam, by a heat insulating layer applying to one surface of the foam and compressing and heating the uninsulated side of the layer in such a way that it is sintered in a leather-like form and most of the remainder of the polyurethane foam plastics layer is compressed into a permanently compressed zone. The heat insulating layer which may itself be a soft polyurethane foam may be subsequently removed. The process may be regulated so that up to 2/3 of the crosssection of the compressed product is given a leather-like sintering while the remainder of the cross-section comprises open cell and permanently compressed pores. The compression ratio may be 1: 3 to 1: 30 In a modification of the process, a press heated on two sides may be used in which at least two webs of foam are passed, each web acting as insulating layer for the other; a third web which acts wholly as an insulating layer may be interposed between the layers which actually come into contact with the heated plates of the press The webs are separated after removal from the press.
