Abstract

1,258,731. Purification of combustion gases. CONZAGA UNIVERSITY, CORP. OF. 1 Jan., 1970 [2 Jan., 1969], No. 16/70. Heading B1B. Hot combustion gases are cooled to a temperature near 32‹F. in order to condense to the liquid phase most of the water-vapour and water-affinitive pollutants (e.g. formaldehyde and formic acid) in the gases, and the aqueous condensate is separated from the remaining gases which may then be discharged to the atmosphere. Hot combustion gases, produced in unit 11, are passed via air preheater 13 and electrostatic precipitator 14 into water-cooled condenser 16. The condensate and gases leaving condenser 16 at about 65‹F. enter condenser 20 which is cooled by a methanol-water solution supplied at a temperature between about 25‹ and 30‹F. The mixture of gases and aqueous condensate leaving condenser 20 enters gas/liquid separator 24. The separated aqueous liquid may be treated with reagents (e.g. hypochlorite) to destroy or precipitate pollutants and then discharged to the sewage system. The gases from separator 24 are passed, either directly or after further cooling in refrigerated condenser 30, to molecular sieve 27 which removes the remaining pollutants. The residual dry, pollutant-free gases are discharged to the atmosphere through stack 29. The sieve 27 can be regenerated by placing it in an oven at 400‹F. The gases eluted during the regeneration are neautralized or extracted by being forced through suitable scrubbers.
