Abstract
1,258,247. Image intensifier tubes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. 5 May, 1969 [18 June, 1968], No. 28874/68. Heading HID. A photocathode for an image intensifier to be used as an electronic .shutter in high-speed photography, is deposited on a metal mesh substrate preferably having 750-1000 square holes per linear inch. In one method of manufacture a copper mesh is pressed into a glass substrate by optically polished carbon blocks whilst the glass is heated (e.g. to 900‹ C.) in a reducing atmosphere. In another method a fibre optics face plate is coated with a photo-resist layer which is exposed to light through the plate; after developing and etching a film of metal such as gold/palladium alloy or silver or aluminium is sputtered or evaporated on and polished to leave the metal only in the grooves formed by the etching. In another method the grooves are formed on an optically flat surface by scribing with a diamond or by a photo-resist method, followed by metal deposition as in the previous method. A further method comprises applying a photo-resist to a chromium covered surface to expose parts of the chromium surface which are then etched away. The resulting transverse resistance may be less than 1 ohm per square and the cathode sensitivity may be about 120 ÁA/L. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,217,477.
