Abstract

1,258,142. Bearings; securing races. KAMAN AEROSPACE CORP. 2 Jan., 1969, No. 259/69. Headings F2A and F2U. A self-lubricating bearing comprises an annular outer member 16 made at least in part of carbonaceous material, and a ceramic inner member 14, which has a bore extending therethrough for mounting the member on a shaft; the outer corners of the bore are protected by a lining 24 of material softer than the ceramic, which extends axially along the bore, and facings 26, similarly of material softer than the ceramic. The linings may be flanged inserts 22 of stainless steel bonded or clamped in place, a deposited layer of nickel-titanium alloy or molybdenum-manganese alloy, or a plastics sleeve with two plastics washers bonded in place. The ceramic material is preferably polycrystalline aluminium oxide, and the carbonaceous material is preferably a blend of amorphous carbon and graphite compacted and impregnated with silver.
