Abstract

125,771. Robinson, H. M. April 26, 1918. Projectiles. - Relates to projectiles adapted to be discharged from a rod or stem by means of a cartridge situated in a central tube a in the projectile, and consists mainly in arranging the cartridge b<1> in front and clear of the conoidal nose of the projectile c. The tube a extends backwards and carries longitudinal or inclined vanes k which are of uniform width or increase in width rearwards. The vanes are welded to the tube or are riveted to collars l on the tube. The front collar may be screwed to the tube and secured thereto by grubscrews; and the rear collar may merely fit smoothly over the tube. The vanes may also be brazed to the body of the projectile, the rear of which may be of conoidal shape. An auxiliary propellent rocket charge r may be used adapted to be ignited by the flash from the cartridge b<1> through a tortuous passage in the tube a or through a fuse u extending longitudinally between the tube a and the base of the rocket charge The bursting charge q is fired by a short fuse z from the rocket charge or by an ordinary time fuse. A percussion fuse is also provided. Several such projectiles may be strapped together on centring distance-pieces, around a central one fitting over the discharging stick; and the bursting charges of these projectiles may be combined into a single charge.
