Abstract

1,257,516. Cathode-ray display tubes. M-O VALVE CO. Ltd. 27 Oct., 1970 [20 Nov., 1969], No. 56835/69. Heading H1D. In a cathode-ray display tube using postdeflection acceleration, wherein the deflection system is shielded from the acceleration field by means of a grid electrode, the grid is supported over at least a part of its periphery by a frame member which is shaped so that the electron beam can strike it substantially only in regions from which secondary electrons and/or reflected electrons do not reach the screen, thereby reducing "flare". In Fig. 2 the grid 17 comprises a number of parallel wires 18 extending between a pair of bars 19 of 4 x 4 mm. cross-section which are held apart by spacers (not shown). A strip of metal 20 0À2 mm. in thickness is welded along the edge of each bar to prevent the electron beam from striking the surface 22. In another arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown) the surfaces 22 are bevelled so that they are protected from the beam by the projecting portion of each bar on the side nearest the deflecting system. The accelerating field may be provided by a resistive wall coating joined at each end to graphite wall coatings (Fig. 1, not shown).
