Abstract
1,257,461. Carrier gas flow control means for gas chromatography. PERKIN-ELMER Ltd. 15 Jan., 1969 [19 Oct., 1967], No. 47612/ 67. Heading B1X. A carrier gas flow control system which enables different constant flow rates to pass through gas chromatography column 3 and detector 4, e.g. a flame ionization detector, comprises gas flow restrictor 1 and flow regulator 2 with their low pressure and high pressure ends connected in parallel as shown, the low pressure end being connected through adjustable needle valve 5 to a point between column 3 and detector 4. With valve 5 closed a common constant flow rate is established in column 3 and detector 4; with valve 5 open to a particular setting, the flow through the by-pass is maintained at a constant pressure by regulator 2, and since the total pressure applied is constant, the flows through column 3 and detector 4 will both be constant though of different values. In modifications (see Figs. 2-4, not shown), the flow rates through the by-pass may be pre-set to particular values; the flow rate through the column 3 may be varied while maintaining the flow rate through detector 4 constant for any particular setting and automatic operation accomplished by governing valve 5 with a servo-amplifier controlled by a flow meter upstream of the column 3.
