Abstract

1,257,403. Oxypropane derivatives. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 26 June, 1970 [23 Aug., 1969], No. 31124/70. Heading C2C. The invention relates to oxypropane derivatives of the general formula wherein Ar is naphthyl, phenyl or a substituted phenyl group and R is hydrogen atom or acetyl group. Compounds claimed per se are the 1,2- propane diols of 3-(2,4-dichloro) phenoxy, 3-(2- methyl, 4-chloro) phenoxy, 3-(2,4,5-trichloro) phenoxy and 3-(beta methoxy) phenoxy; and the 1,2-diacetoxy propane of 3-(2-methyl-4- chloro) phenoxy, 3-(2,4-dichloro) phenoxy, 3- (2,4,5-trichloro) phenoxy and 3-beta naphthoxy. The compounds may be prepared by reacting 3-halo-1,2-propane diol of the formula where Hal is a halogen atom with a compound of the formula Ar.OH in an aqueous alkali hydroxide solution to obtain the novel 1,2-propane diols or by reacting the 1,2-propane diol of Formula I with an acetylating agent in a solvent to obtain the 1,2-diacetoxy propane. The compounds are used as active ingredients in herbicide compositions.
