In a recirculating ball-type screw-and-nut gear, the means for returning balls from one end to the other of a portion of the groove 11 in the nut 10 comprises two inserts 16 in radial apertures 14 in the nut, the inserts having scoops 19 which depend into the groove 12 of the screw 13 and face in opposite circumferential directions, the scoops being connected by a. return passage partly definedby. the base surface of a slot 15 in the outer surfaceof the nut between the apertures 14. As shown, the apertures 14 are cylindrical and open into adjacent turns of the groove 11. The inserts 16 have. D-shaped heads 17 the flats of which interengage to prevent rotation of the inserts. In a modification (Fig. 4, not, shown), the apertures (28) are more than one groove pitch apart and are elongated circumferentially, the inserts being similarly shaped. The top of the slot (15) is covered by a plate.
